Problem Description, Requirements, Restraints, and Research.
Problem Description: Disabled children spend the majority of their time in their rooms, specifically lying in bed. Therefore, a major problem is the lack of activities for them to participate in. By staying connected to the internet, the disabled children can play games and take advantage of educational opportunities. However, the use of laptops is complicated for those with limited mobility. For these reasons, we aim to design a specialized laptop desk that can be easily used by those who are oftentimes confined to their beds.
Requirements: 1) The design must not impede the movement and position of the children lying in their beds. 2) The design must hold the laptop in place so as to not slip and injure the child.
Restraints: The solution must use cost-efficient materials so that it is a product that disabled children can easily purchase.
Research: We researched Blissful Bedrooms, an organization that seeks "to transform the personal spaces of young individuals who have very limited resources, and severe physical disabilities." Inspired by their work, we decided that we wanted to design a specialized laptop desk to provide the children with a way to use their laptops while in bed.
